Maximilian Schmitt studied voice with Anke Eggers in Berlin, trained at the Bavarian State Opera’s Opera Studio, and was an ensemble member at the Nationaltheater Mannheim. He gained international acclaim in roles such as Tamino in Amsterdam, Idomeneo in Strasbourg, Don Ottavio in Vienna, and Pedrillo in Milan under Zubin Mehta.
Recent highlights include his debut as Siegmund in Die Walküre under Kent Nagano. In the 2025/26 season, he reprises the role in concert with the SWR Symphony Orchestra under François-Xavier Roth and makes his role debut as Lohengrin in Hanover.
He has appeared with leading orchestras including the Cleveland Orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, working under conductors such as Kirill Petrenko, Fabio Luisi, Franz Welser-Möst, Teodor Currentzis, and René Jacobs.
In the 2025/26 season, his engagements include Bach’s St Matthew Passion, Haydn’s The Creation, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, and Beethoven’s Fidelio. Lied recitals, including Schubert’s Winterreise, remain central to his artistic work. His discography includes a recent recording of Die Walküre, in which he sings Siegmund.
