Michał Zaborski is a violist and composer, and a graduate of the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw.
Active in both classical and broadly understood improvised music, he has developed a distinctive artistic voice that defies easy categorisation. Continuously exploring new means of expression, he seeks out previously uncharted possibilities of the viola: an instrument only marginally present in contemporary jazz language. His work to redefine the viola’s role and setting it in new musical contexts has become one of the more compelling developments on the Polish music scene.
Winner of prizes at viola competitions in Poland, Austria, and Slovenia, he is a member of the Atom String Quartet, with which he has won four Fryderyk Awards. For more than a decade, he was a member of the Sinfonia Varsovia and now serves as principal viola of the Radom Chamber Orchestra.
His debut album Feeling Earth, released on the Slovak label Hevhetia, was nominated for a Fryderyk Award in the category of Jazz Phonographic Debut of the Year.
