Violinist Yu Zhuang was born in Shanghai in 1981. After completing his studies in China, he continued his education at the Basel Academy of Music with professors Walter Levin and Rainer Schmidt.
From 2003 to 2014, he performed as a first violinist in string quartets, most recently spending four years with the Gémeaux Quartet. With this ensemble, he won international prizes at the Joseph Haydn Chamber Music Competition in Vienna, the Schubert and Modernity Competition in Graz, and the International String Quartet Competition in Zurich. Throughout that time, the quartet pursued an active concert career, performing in Switzerland, Germany, England, Japan, Spain, and Sweden.
In the 2013/14 season, Yu Zhuang taught chamber music in Basel. In 2014, he was appointed concertmaster of the Northwest German Philharmonic in Herford, and in May 2015, he assumed the position of second concertmaster of the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra.
